Some of you may remember a nonsense convo where a guy was lecturing me on how the Wonder Woman movie wasn’t feminist last week. We rewatched it in my house so here’s a thread on how the movie is super feminist /1
There’s no suggestion that men are necessary at all. Diana is from a society that is egalitarian and racially diverse. They have a queen but there are also senators and the political structure is clearly not authoritarian /2
Hippolyta lectures the young Diana that war isn’t something one should want but is a last resort. Despite the warrior nature of their society war isn’t glorified /3
When Diana first sees Chris pine naked she has no shame or discomfort at his nakedness. He is uncomfortable and crouching but she’s just curious /4
Patty Jenkins films the entire movie through a female gaze. The fighting, the clothing, even the realistic occasional thigh wiggle. The women are not sexualized in how they are shown /5
Despite the fact that Diana and Steve sleep together their relationship is not central to the movie, sex isn’t central to their relationship, and the sex isn’t shown /6
Even the secretary was a full character who was a suffragist AND showed up to stop a villain from escaping /7
When Diana first reveals herself we Wonder Woman to cross the no mans land she’s inspired by humanitarian concern for children and the village. When she crosses she destroys the weapon not the soldiers. Through out the movie she aims for weapons not people /8
When Diana shows up at the gala this would usually be the moment where the woman is shown gorgeous and sexualized but instead she’s in a simple dress that holds her sword well. Her image isn’t fundamentally changed or sexualized /9
The values of the movie are ending war, lowering the death toll, destroying horrific weapons. NOT winning a war, killing the enemy (except Ares). Even the German chemist is spared by Diana /10
Obviously I have strong feelings about this! If you’re interested in more thoughts I’ll repost my article on male gaze feminism in strong female characters as opposed to the female feminist gaze in Wonder Woman https://link.medium.com/TrcqNJzO69
