I would really encourage Marco to review the history of anti-Catholic politics in America.

Most people may be aware that the first Catholic president, JFK, was a Democrat. However, Al Smith (D) became the first Catholic at the top of either party’s ticket in 1928. (1/5) https://twitter.com/marcorubio/status/1309890863405957120
Anti-Catholic rhetoric and terrorism were used by the KKK and others to keep Smith from the White House.

Cross burnings, targeted harassment, and even the assassination of Fr. James Coyle in 1921 were all perpetrated by the klan against Catholics during this time period. (2/5)
“A Klan colleague in remote North Manchester, Ind., warned his audience, in booming tones, of the imminent arrival of the pope: ‘He may even be on the northbound train tomorrow! He may! He may! Be warned! America is for Americans! Watch the trains!’”(3/5)

During the 1960s JFK faced similar anti-Catholic denunciations. This prejudice continues in some corners today.

I’m very familiar with the friction between *denominations. Or, as I’ve heard it offensively put, the difference between Christianity and “the Catholic religion.”(4/5)
What really is gross about @marcorubio’s statement is that he knows, or should know, that it isn’t anti-Catholicism driving the push against the nominee.

Rubio, a Catholic, is manipulating a history of his own people’s abuse for his short-term political purposes.(5/5)
