There is an old Russian fable about two farmers who live across from each other, separated by a dirt road. Both of them are stick in the mud, dirt poor and they despise each other. Neither of them can afford any livestock.
Farmer A prays and prays and prays for relief, until one day, he looks outside and sees a shaft of sunlight shining on a cow who has grazed onto his land, ecstatic, the farmer runs begins to domesticate the cow and produce a surplus of food for the first time ever.
Farmer B sees this and is astounded and shocked. Farmer B begins to pray and pray and pray like Farmer A until one day, a shaft of sunlight appears through the clouds and the archangel Gabriel appears before him and says “Through your dedication, you have been granted one wish..”
Farmer B looks at him sternly, and says “I want you to kill that man’s cow”
