It strikes me that feeling unsure about how good you are and whether people will reliably like you is a driver & symptom of a remarkable range of mental health issues:

1. Depression
2. Anxiety
3. Borderline, avoidant, histrionic & fragile narcissistic personality disorders... 1/
4. Eating disorders
5. Probably some others groupings I'm not familiar with

(By contrast I guess that mania, grandiose narcissism and psychopathy are what you get at the other end of the low self image spectrum.) 2/
Insecurity is also a driver of a lot of mundane undesired behaviour:

1. Defensively taking a negative view of others, rather than celebrating their strengths
2. Finding it very hard to directly acknowledge mistakes and learn from them
3. Perfectionism ... 3/
4. Avoiding trying new things for fear of failure.

I understand the 'self-esteem movement' didn't really work out and maybe even backfired. But you can sure as hell see where it was coming from. 4/
Most people are good, their weaknesses are normal relatable, other people like them plenty, and they should feel fine about themselves. 5/
