why the term "delulu" is ableist; thread by a person with delusional disorder
the term "delulu" is often used as an insult within fandoms against obsessive fans, such as those who believe they will end up dating their idol or those who aggressively protect their faves from any sort of criticism or backlash.
their behaviour is viewed upon as "delusional" simply because it seems laughable and outlandish to other individuals. however delusional behaviour and delusions are NOT an insult or a buzzword, they are extremely life-consuming and often connected to trauma.
i suffer from delusional disorder, more specifically persecutory delusional disorder. the delusions i experience include the belief people are conspiring against me, that i'm constantly being followed or spied on, that my shower or tap-water is being poisoned or

that i'm constantly in danger or at risk of accidents and so on. as a result getting seated into a car is difficult, i check my entire house for cameras or places that someone could hide, i sometimes deprive myself of foods or water

and i also have reality disconnection. i often feel that the world is glitching or is disintegrating on its own, i break things and attack others to see if the world and people around me are real and my body feels heavier and robotic.

what the entire term does is poke fun of people with actual life-consuming and dangerous delusions and behaviour, things that lead people to kill themselves.
we already face so much systematic inequality and media misinterpretation and a lot of us have had the term used against us in a derogatory meaning. you are turning such a huge part of our struggling into a meme.

delusions are not something to make fun of. they affect your everyday life and lead to depression, suicidal behaviour, eating disorders and self-isolation. they're deeply tied to trauma and ptsd.
if a fan is acting weirdly protective and obsessive over their faves either 1) just leave them the fuck alone or 2) it's possible to poke fun at them without calling them anything.
also, the belief that a famous person is in love or interested in you is a form of delusional disorder, called erotomanic delusional disorder. many of the known "stalker fans" or obsessive fans of idols have suffered with this.
this is kinda blowing up so if you don't suffer from psychosis i don't care about your opinions let me suffer with my delusions alone /lh
this thread has gotten 700 likes in only a couple minutes so please consider that qrting me on private can trigger these delusions or can leave to panic attacks, i understand twt is dangerous recently but it's actually dangerours to me /srs
to anyone reading i've been educated that the term delulu in itself aave. i still personally believe that we wouldn't use delusional and delusions as an insult or a buzzword but please consider the history of the word delulu, and once again i'm so sorry. https://twitter.com/dykaeism/status/1310160857196883969?s=19
i should've titled this thread "why using delusional as an insult or buzzword is ableist" as opposed to the word delulu. thanks to op for educating me and i'm thankful so many others have reached out that i've educated them ❤
