Impa is trending. The name given to many of Zelda's caregivers over the generations, who seems to alternate between being super old granny and super hot granny. I suppose it's time we did another fashion ranking!
Legend of Zelda (1986) - Impa first appeared as backstory in the first game's manual, seen here with a functional red hooded robe that fails to communicate that she works for the royal family. Dull necklace, & NO SHOES! How are you supposed to escape Ganon barefoot? 2/10
Adventure of Link (1987) - Between the first game and its sequel, Impa's hair went from red to white, her nose shrunk and her ears grew. Still rocking the same red road, but traded in the necklace for a gold one, and now has two gold hairbands. Small but appreciated upgrade. 5/10
Valiant Comics (1991) - Impa sat out most of the 16-bit era as well as the cartoon, but she does make a few small appearances in this five issue comic series. Same outfit as before, though the gold necklace is traded in for a pearl white one. So, step down. 4/10
Wand of Gamelon (1993) - CD-i Impa trades in red for blue. Nothing looks good in these games, but at least they didn't try and get fancy and different with it. Red looks better, I'm afraid. 1/10
Ocarina of Time (1998) - Bam, everything changes. Impa goes from handmaiden to mystic ninja. Fashion a bit of a mixed bag, workout gear for mobility hampered by a useless belly plate with an engraved navel for some reason? Still, iconic transformation. 7/10
Oracle of Ages/Seasons (2001) - For the record, totally one of the hot Impas. Just beaming with confidence. Another very different look, a nice red dress cut exactly how she wants it, nice sandals a long veil to bring it back to her nursemaid profession. I love this Impa. 9/10
Twilight Princess (2006) - Okay, so this is Impaz, which is legally distinct from Impa. 🙄 The most complex fashion yet, patterns in the skit, blue in the belt that catches your eye, collar and sleeves, very nice. Only thing that lets it down is the weird earmuff hairstyle. 7/10
Skyward Sword (2011) - Punk Rock Impa, with face tattoos, boxer's tape for wristbands and fingerless gloves for shoes. An Impa with an attitude, I love the single long braid out front. 9/10
Skyward Sword (2011) - And now, the old version of this Impa. Obviously, the thing that stands out is her hat that's also a tent, which is just, whaaaaaa. I do love how she kept that braid growing over the years and coiled it up like a fire hose. A little too silly. 6/10
A Link Between Worlds (2013) - A throwback to NES-era Impa, but with many improvements. Gold trimming on the old red robe, a light blue apron for a dash of color, belt and cuffs, and the two stretches of hair out front really brings life to the old design. 8/10
Hyrule Warriors (2014) - The first playable Impa! And she's a total badass! Taking the "armored ninja" look from OoT and mixing it with the flare from SS, it is both flexible with striking gold highlights against blue and silver. Plus, big ol' feathers for a bonus. 10/10
Breath of the Wild (2017) - The oldest Impa yet, and the one with the most Japanese influence. A tiny lady with a giant kasa, breezy robes, and some beads. Very different and very pleasant. 8/10
HW: Age of Calamity (2020) - And now, the young version of BotW Impa. Absurd body transformation aside, this is an Impa without confidence, and you don't realize how much that's critical to her character until it's gone. Fashion echoes her older look. Way too much hair. 4/10
So, what did we learn?
-Impa is a very malleable character, more so than any other in the franchise.
-Old nurse maid or badass ninja warripor, the key to Impa is her being a voice of authority and a loyal guardian.
-Bring back Sexy Big Impa.
