it continues to astound me how few films pass the bechdel test.

the criteria are v simple:

1. the film needs to have at least 2 [named] women

2. who talk to each other

3. about something other than a man.
I wonder if it’s simply that so many films are made/written by men (ofc), and they simply don’t have direct experience of nuanced female relationships? so it doesn’t occur to them to portray them?
trying to think of a useful, nuanced way to understand this that isn’t just shouting “BOO, patriarchy”
I’d love to see more films with characters that are incidentally female, and not Female as a Defining Trait... the rise of “empowered female characters” is wonderful, but there’s another step yet to go
not sure this thread will get much traction esp because the majority of my followers for some reason are male (hi tech friends!?? 👋)

but I will continue ranting about this into the void
