Now Amy Coney Barrett speaking. "I love the United States and I love the United States Constitution. I am truly humbled by the prospect of serving on the Supreme Court."
ACB says she will be in mind of RBG, "a woman of enormous talent and consequence" whose life of public service is impressive. Cites RBG's relationship with Scalia (who ACB clerked for), who despite their differences were best of friends.
Says of Scalia, "his judicial philosophy is mine, too. The judge must apply the law as reason." Judges are not policy makers and must set aside their own policy views when judging.
"Our children are my greatest joy, even though they deprive me of any reasonable amount of sleep," ACB says. Then praises her husband Jessie for his sacrifice and love of their family. Says she is very fortunate to have a superb husband. And the kids think he's the better cook.
ACB says she wants to acknowledge her fellow Americans, says the Supreme Court belongs to all of us, not just those in her own circle. That she would administer justice without respect to persons, do equal right to poor and rich, and discharge duties faithfully.
ACB says she will "meet the challenge with both humility and courage." Says she looks forward to working with senators and will do her best to demonstrate that she is worthy of their support.
