the darkest and most mature themes in winx club: a thread
people are fond of calling winx club a childish immature show and make fun of the people who watch it. this is obviously very wrong as the series featured a lot of very mature and dark issues aimed at adult audiences. let's go 🦋
death and grief: death is one of the darkest things about human nature. this is seen through the death of musa's mom, nabu's death and also, daphne's death. the show makes us understand that the loss of a loved one is an incredibly sad thing to experience:
the death of musa's mom is talked about very early on in the series and we see the devastating effects this situation had on musa who copes with it through music which was a bond she shared with her mom. her father's disagreement with her doing music makes it sadder
return to me is a song that musa wrote about her mother. here, she expresses her extreme despair about the situation and wishes for her mom to come back to her when though no magic can bring her back
the death of nabu was a shock for the whole fandom. he had grown to be a very appreciated character since s3 and due to his genuine love for aisha, got engaged to her. he died by sacrificing himself and this changed aisha forever. she was still grieving in s5
daphne's death had a deep effect on bloom in the earlier seasons as she learned her sister died by saving her. even while dead, daphne kept protecting bloom and guiding her as she growed as a mature fairy
child neglect: aisha had a very sad and isolated childhood. her parents believed a princess should behave in a strict and proper manner and thus scrutinized everything she did. she had only one friend, anne, but they were forced to separate. this fueled aisha's fear of the dark
genocide: we are told in s1 that earth fairies had disappeared centuries ago. we later learn why in s4. the wizards of the black circle captured them, cut their wings and kept them locked. it would be stupid to think they didn't murder most of them in the process. brutal genocide
poverty: being unable to afford basic human needs is horrible. musa grew up in poverty. it was so bad that her father couldn't afford food and even medicine when musa's mom fell sick leading to her death. bloom too was poor and was made fun of by mitzi due to this
suicide: at the end of s4, due to her being haunted by guilt and extreme sorrow, nebula had decided to die in the omega dimension. it was very disturbing to see her in tears and done with life as the cave was falling apart
alcohol and drinking: this is seen as early as the first season when riven is seen talking with darcy in a bar. we can clearly see alcohol on their table. this is also seen in s2 during the hallowinx episode where the winx go to a party. flora is drinking wine lol
sex: the series is full of sexual inuendos and adult themes, which is surprising. i have 2 examples of this. first, we can see this alfea fairy making a sexual joke to palladium and the other girls laughing along
and also in this s4 scene where it is alluded that bloom and sky had sex after this conversation. i love this lol
depression: bloom suffered from depression in the earlier seasons and this is something majority of people don't know. in season 1, she was literally 16 and believed in fairies? her love for fairies and all the books on fantasy she possessed was a way for her to escape reality
after leaving alfea and returning to her home, she is told the truth about her parents not being her biological ones. on top of learning her kingdom was destroyed, this emotional affected her. she was sad throughout the episodes and had random mood swings
revenge: vengeance is a dark concept. we see this in s3 when the winx decide kill valtor for causing tecna's 'death' and equally in s4, where the earth fairies vow to destroy the wizards for what they did to them. it was obviously much better executed in s3
the enchantix arc as a whole was very mature and disturbing. basically all the winx, had to almost die to earn the final fairy form. each and every one of their sacrifice was scary, sad and very well executed. this perfectly represents the winx's journey to adulthood
another dark moment in winx club is when aisha loses her sight due to a spell from valtor. it is incredibly disturbing and sad to see her cry in despair and sorrow, deeply scared about the situation
tecna's sacrifice is equally a very scary moment. after valtor opened a vortex in andros, tecna decides to sacrifice herself and close it. this results in her getting dragged to the omega dimension and thought to be dead. this had very brutal emotional impact on the winx
divorce: we all know how sad divorce is and also, how it can affect a child. stella's parents are divorced. we learn about it in s1 where she says she's attending alfea to become a fairy that will be able to make people happy and perhaps bring her parents back together
forced marriage: after having her childhood ruined by her parents due to them always controlling everything she did, aisha was equally planned to marry nabu who was a total stranger to her at the time. this led to her running away from andros
