ok we cracked the code: thread on personality compatibility between nen users

hisoka only mentions that enhancers and transmuters are compatible, but I analyzed the relationships (platonic, romantic and otherwise) in the show and it follows a pattern similar to compatibility in nen mastery

Nen users can gain 80% mastery of the skill next to them ie an enhancer can gain 80% mastery of transmutation or emission. Given hisoka’s comment on enhancer/transmuter compatibility, gon’s extremely close bond with killua, and leorio’s brotherlike love for gon, it makes sense

However, I think there’s another aspect of nen personality compatibility: opposites attract. Conjuration is diagonal from emission; their personalities are extremely different (short tempered and impatient vs nervous and high strung) but leopika/ melody and kurapika work well

Similarly, you have illumi and his relationship with hisoka: a manipulator and a transmuter. Their personalities, fickle and deceitful vs logical and deeply attached to family, are completely different but they complement each other very well

Something to note: opposite personalities have incredibly strong bonds but they are also prone to being unhealthy and unstable! Silva and Kikyo complement each other well and they can work well together to further their common interests but their relationship is toxic
