This is my new jumper. It has a back story. In June last year, my mother gave me a magazine she had saved for me because it included a knitting pattern she thought I’d like. She was in hospital at the time and we had a lovely chat about it. I told her I’d make it. 1/7
She had to stop knitting a few years ago as she wasn’t physically able for it any more, but she knew her stuff. Booted from her civil service job when she got married, she made pin money by knitting Aran sweaters, most of which were sold in tourist shops. 2/7
(Once I was really upset to realise when I’d finished an Aran that I’d fucked up a cable. “No one will ever notice,” she said. A year or two later she told me she had been behind someone on the bus and whoever had knit their jumper had made A HAMES of the cables.) 3/7
It’s because of her I can pick up dropped stitches, weave in loose ends and sort out most knitting disasters. (As with life in general, mistakes happen but can mostly be fixed.) Anyway, that day we discussed the pattern was the last time I saw her conscious. 4/7
I bought the wool in @thisisknit a few weeks later. Kudos due to the ladies there — they’re always great, but they were particularly nice to an over-emotional customer waving a pattern and talking about her dead mother. I knit 90% of the jumper over the next few months. 5/7
But then it languished in a bag for months. I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. Casting off and sewing it up felt like slamming a door somehow. In the end, I mustered up the courage. It’s not perfect but I love it. Wore it out today for the first time. Thanks Mum

For the knitters, the blue is @ricodesigngmbh Merino DK and the gorgeous green is @townhouseyarns Drury DK. The broken moss stitch was a bit tedious to be honest (sorry Mum), as I found it didn’t make for a quick knit, but it gives a really lovely drape. 7/7
