Good thread/convo on land acknowledgements as performative anti-racist liberalism. I have used land acknowledgments many times, but realize it’s not much use unless accompanied with talk about giving land back. https://twitter.com/blackleftaf/status/1309889104998363136
I still feel like it’s appropriate as a preface to a course unit focused explicitly on decolonization and Indigenous knowledges, though (?). Or before presenting work that explicitly calls for more than empty gestures toward reconciliation (?).
I add question marks above because it’s still something I’m figuring out, and want to avoid using this practice as part of an empty gesture for reconciliation that does little more than absolve settler guilt.
