it just occurred to me that the one (1) ethics class i was required to take in engineering school focused on the ethics of not making mistakes (eg Therac-25, Chernobyl)

i don’t remember learning about the ethics of refusing to build things that are fundamentally bad
to this day the only field i’ve seen that pays real attention to ethics at a societal or cultural level rather than “don’t harm clients directly and don’t make mistakes” is social work, and they STILL have plenty of ethical problems
i do not understand why some things go viral like apparently people really like talking about the deficiencies of engineering and CS ethics coursework
