You can do all the right things and still have an illness or condition. You can exercise, eat healthy and still have a condition. You might even also take medication and still have the condition. Or maybe you can’t do any of that. And that’s okay. You’re doing enough.
These illnesses can make the very basic things we need to do exhausting and extremely painful. Everyone has a different limit. You’re doing enough when you’re in the limits of your own body. That’s all you can do, and there’s no shame in that.
Anyone who thinks that chronic illnesses, disabilities, and mental health conditions happen because of the fault of the patient doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Anyone who thinks we stay sick because we’re not good at self care doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
You can run every morning and eat healthy and sleep regularly and have a good job and still become chronically ill and/or disabled. You can do all the right things and genetics, an accident, or even a medical procedure can cause long term health problems and stress.
It happens. It’s not something that happens because someone was lazy or overweight. BMI was invented by a eugenicist. It’s not a good or reliable measure of health. People get sick. Sometimes we stay sick. People need healthcare. That includes people who aren’t going to get well.
Stop blaming chronic illnesses, mental illnesses & disabilities on the person living with it.
