You can do all the right things and still have an illness or condition. You can exercise, eat healthy and still have a condition. You might even also take medication and still have the condition. Or maybe you canât do any of that. And thatâs okay. Youâre doing enough.
These illnesses can make the very basic things we need to do exhausting and extremely painful. Everyone has a different limit. Youâre doing enough when youâre in the limits of your own body. Thatâs all you can do, and thereâs no shame in that.
Anyone who thinks that chronic illnesses, disabilities, and mental health conditions happen because of the fault of the patient doesnât know what theyâre talking about. Anyone who thinks we stay sick because weâre not good at self care doesnât know what theyâre talking about.
You can run every morning and eat healthy and sleep regularly and have a good job and still become chronically ill and/or disabled. You can do all the right things and genetics, an accident, or even a medical procedure can cause long term health problems and stress.
It happens. Itâs not something that happens because someone was lazy or overweight. BMI was invented by a eugenicist. Itâs not a good or reliable measure of health. People get sick. Sometimes we stay sick. People need healthcare. That includes people who arenât going to get well.
Stop blaming chronic illnesses, mental illnesses & disabilities on the person living with it.
