Mornin’ friends! I’m headed out to Marcus-David Peters Circle to meet our best candidates for local office and eat some fish 😋 https://twitter.com/justiceformdp/status/1309823573201223680
The Davis shell has been recently redecorated.
Someone has left a pumpkin (?) in front of the Jeff Davis Memorial Diving Platform.
There are zines! This one on redlining and heat islands is 🔥
Check them out at the table to the west of the circle.
I found Alex, who is always nice to see at these events. She’ll be threading better than me as usual. https://twitter.com/alexoxford3/status/1309902773991944193
There are people with yellow armbands scattered around the edges of the circle. According to them, they’re security from a few various orgs, including the Virginia Defenders. None of them appear to be armed.
The Virginia Defenders seem like good people. They’re doing a tour of the African Burial Ground in Shockoe tomorrow afternoon, in support of creating a proper memorial at the site. https://www.facebook.com/200985546594520/posts/4045147188844984/?extid=QFo4JumYDDSr4bEr
These buffoons, on the other hand, are not security, and are armed. https://twitter.com/alexoxford3/status/1309913259189981184
I finally got a Marcus-David Peters wristband! #HelpNotDeath
. @cchellez is out here doing community support work for y’all. She’s one of a bunch of people who have been maintaining the community garden here, and I hear she’s going to deliver some of the spoils back to the circle tomorrow 😋 https://twitter.com/cchellez/status/1309915550097833984
Also out here: @MrLegacyJones, who I’m told will be speaking sometime soon and who you should vote for if you’re in the 6th district. Apparently his supporters phonebank on Tuesdays.
Kristen of Richmond For Some is kicking off the event, prior to the candidates speaking. As you can probably guess, I have mixed feelings about her organization.
First up: @kenyaRVA, who sits on the city school board and supports removing police from our schools. (If you don’t support this, what is wrong with you?)
The Capitol Police who buzzed us earlier apparently were investigating someone “gathering sticks”. Do they think we’re going to start a fire at a political rally? Even if we were, is that really such an urgent danger that you need to send two cop vans in advance?
Still plenty of cop presence. Reminder that this is a POLITICAL FISH FRY. This is the least threatening event you could possibly have, but we’ve got leftists out here, so the cops think we’re gonna do crime
I have finally eaten some fish. Every batch is different, which is a wildly underrated benefit to community food. My partner got a crispy whole fish with bones, I got a classic fried fish fillet. Both were delicious.
Someone from the Virginia Defenders is passing out their quarterly newspaper. I was surprised to find @GoadGatsby’s face on page 13. https://twitter.com/virginiadefend1/status/1309885204379635713
In other news, I just had to instablock a follower for the first time. My dude, the fish here is way too delicious to have been fried by white people.
As the event ends, capitol police enter the circle to enforce tent regulations. The very first minute they can. Cops seem to care a hell of a lot about tent regulations around black people...
(reminder that tent regulations in the first place aren’t about public safety, they’re about criminalizing homelessness)
And now, my contractually obligated photo of the Marcus-David Peters Circle sign.
You may have noticed that this thread skips over all of the speeches entirely. Much like Alex, I was very hungry and my attention level kind of fell apart. If I find a thread that has a summary, I’ll link it.
