I’m a lifelong Catholic who believes strongly in the separation of church and state. From what I have read, Amy Coney Barrett is a more radical type of Catholic than I’ve ever been, though in fairness, I’ve known good people over the years who were similar to her. 1/
At this point, I’m against the nomination solely because of its proximity to the election. I don’t know enough about Barrett to judge her competence for the role—that would come out in the hearings. 2/
If she is indeed unable to separate her personal religious views from her jurisprudence, I would also oppose her on those grounds. I would just caution against judging someone too harshly on the basis of their religion before we know the full details. 3/3
P.S. There’s practical political reasoning behind this too. I live in a swing state w/extremely tight polling margins & a large Catholic population (at least in my area of the state). We really don’t need Trump using Dems’ words to make a faulty case that they are anti-Christian.
