I posted about east Chinatown on IG a few days ago and received a number of messages. So let’s go on a walking tour — Gerard street, from Broadview to Carlaw. I feel that this neighbourhood doesn’t get a lot of attention, and it could use some love during these times.
While commonly known as the second ‘official’ Chinatown of TO, dating back to the early 70s, I was always fascinated by the no. of Vietnamese businesses here. Once home to thriving Hoa community (learned that over decades many have moved to North York/Richmond Hill)
Salons, butcher shops, bakeries, convenience stores, the more you look the more you see...that its Little Vietnam! as much as its Chinatown, Chinese-Vietnamese town. Some of our oldest Vietnamese restaurants are right here. And, some of the best. They could use some love right now
Here are some of my favourites, and please add yours. Bach Yen, opened a decade ago and a restaurant that has a very loyal following for its fiery Bun Bo Hue (I can’t seem to go higher than medium spice), and Bun (vermicelli) offerings. Also love the spring rolls here.
Que Ling Vietnamese Cusine! Ahh an institution! I challenge you to find better bánh cuốn -- those slippery, silky steamed rice rolls stuffed with black fungus, heavenly. Served with banana leaf scented chả lụa - sausage. Pho is excellent here (Pho bo Ga, chicken + beef)
Another longstanding institution — Rose’s Vietnamese sandwiches which I believe has been here at least 20 years. A love affair with banh mi — point and request, extra pate, extra chill sauce a must. This is also where used to pick up smiling fish brand of Chili sauce.
If you do stop at Rose’s, don’t skip the steamed layer cakes — usually available on weekends. Still warm. Wonderful pandan flavour. Banh da lan?
Mi mi restaurant, another institution. Nearly 30 years old this one, same family — extensive pan regional north to south menu, known for ga-chicken noodle soup dishes. The clay pot fish - Ca Kho To is excellent.
A few other options. Hanoi 3 seasons has been here for many years. I prefer this location to the Queen one. Haven’t tried Pho east. I hear Pho house is good. Urge you to walk through this part of town. Broadview park is closeby for a picnic.
