There are many good critiques of this new chilling government guidance for PSHE, but I'd like to highlight in particular:

1. The government expects Muslim *children* to *have to* condemn actions of terrorists who claim to act in the name of Islam

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/plan-your-relationships-sex-and-health-curriculum#choosing-resources
This is outrageous. The idea of having to condemn the actions of those you have nothing to do with, is unacceptable in general & even more so, for young children

It is important children learn that they aren't responsible for the actions of others, and have no duty to condemn
2. The choice to exclude Islamophobia from the guidance (noting government line that it is not a type of racism so is not included *at all*) not only speaks to the way the gvt prioritises the racism that suits it politically

It also speaks to how Islamophobia is totally ignored
3. The government is considering an "extreme position" to be accusations against the state (eg. Islamophobia is an institutional problem in the governing Party & in the policies it enacts?) which they determine to be "unsubstantiated"

Who will be the arbiter of this? Astonishing
4. The idea that promoting "divisive or victim narratives" is an extreme position if it is "harmful to British society" is astonishing.

Who decides if calling out the Islamophobia in our society falls under this? Is it Islamophobic groups that have influence at the top of gvt?
On my first tweet in this thread, the reason why I state that this affects children, is because it calls failure to condemn an "extreme political stance" objectively.

What is the consequence of that for (all?) children who do not want to be deemed to have an "extreme" stance?
We have to be honest about what this is doing - it is imposing the government's political narrative (which is seen to ignore Muslims if not being actively against Muslims) on its guidance for schools.

It's unacceptable
And whilst some may claim that it is not biased etc., let's be clear.

Whilst the government's rule breaking is well established, that would never put it in scope. This is targeting others...those it doesn't like.
