I don’t know why we have to keep saying this. But the NHS COVID app DOES NOT track your location. DOES NOT identify you personally. It uses anonymous tokens that are shared with any device that is close enough for long enough.
If you or anyone you have a token for (limited to 2 weeks) marks themselves positive, their token is marked as positive and when your phone asks for the status of the tokens it has a history of, you will then be alerted to having been in contact with a Covid confirmed case
My only criticism so far is the issue with registering positive cases from NHS, PHE or ONS tests (and that’s easy to fix). But the core functionality and privacy centric approach is the best weapon we have outside of wearing masks and washing your hands. Download it.
