There’s something to be said as the Caribbean being read as paradise and a place to escape, where even in the midst of a pandemic, the welfare of its people are still secondary. https://twitter.com/mvp242/status/1309601320739971081
I cant articulate it outside of saying stay home. Like no birthday celebration, fun excursion, etc. is that important and there’s been a trend of monied people “escaping” to the Caribbean to find some kind of solace during a obviously hard time for everyone.
Even outside of the context of the pandemic, the Caribbean is a place for one to shed and to become undone (a shedding of decorum, responsibility, etc. an undoing one’s self as a means to relax), amidst a post-colonial reality that doesn’t afford its residents the same.
It’s residents engaging in the same undoing and shedding practice is deemed antithetical. It’s all wild.
No one in that video is wearing a mask and that’s jarring when I’m thinking of the vulnerable folks who are employed in the hospitality and tourism sector exposed to all kinds of other groups of people who think they’re fine and not in need of masks.
