If the variety show <Hang out with Yoo? (Yoo Jaesuk)> personally called Rain to appear after the “GANG syndrome”, it was actually Lee Eunjae, known as “JaeJae” of SBS youtube show <MMTG> who brought back “GANG” as meta for the show and made it go viral.
It started as a section of SUBUSU News in February 2018. The number of subscribers to the channel <MMTG> quickly reached 800,000, surpassing SUBUSU News (500,000) in a year. When producers Lee Eunjae (30) and Hong Minji (28) started their corner, they didn’t imagine this.
It was also <MMTG> that popularized the newly coined word "유교걸: Yugyo Girl" that women who grew up in patriarchal environments used in self-help jargon. "Yugyo Girl” is a parody of Lee Hyori's hit song U-Go-Girl. 유교/Yugyo in Korean is confucianism.
It was during the Han dynasty (206BCE-220CE) that Confucianism was adopted as the government's state doctrine, further reinforcing male authority and patrilineal customs. In the vid, JaeJae says “I’m the oldest daughter but property inheritance goes to my younger brother? No!”
JaeJae’s nickname "Yeonbanin" is slang for celeb and ordinary person. Her unusual attitude toward idol groups always makes headlines. Even if she would dance and sing herself during interviews, she never forces them to do anything nor does she mention private or sensitive topics.
I’ll make another thread soon for her interview about the idol industry and the behind scenes of variety shows!
