Today’s thoughts: I’m tired of seeing Breonna Taylor’s face everywhere. Nothing is being done and posterizing her to get ppl to care is not working.
Justice in terms of locking the police who killed her behind bars is against abolition. And since she’s passed, she will never receive justice. So, we should be focused on uplifting what her family wants. What does her lover want? What does justice look like for them?
Do they want to see her face and name everywhere without their version of justice being served?
Also, what does justice look like for a murdered person? Do black ppl need to write down what justice will look like for them in case they’re killed?
Collective grief from the community is real and valid rn. it can look like protesting and rioting and fighting for abolition. However, what if that’s not what Breonna’s family wants? Do we put the community’s version of justice first or her family? How is justice served here?
you can argue that the communities version of justice ought to be what the family wants, since we all want to stop police murdering of black ppl overall. I think this is what everyone is assuming.
How do we do stop police murders? then the conflict of abolition vs reform comes in and it gets murky. Abolition means we don’t have police. is that what the community wants? Abt 20% of us, yes. What about reform? 80%. How do we bridge these numbers?
How do we, as a ppl, get on the same page first? And where does the family’s version of justice fit in here? Are they in the 20% or 80%?
So two things:
- We have to have a clear idea of what we all want if we want to move.
- Reform as a means to abolish is unacceptable to most &
*to most abolitionists.
If there is a right answer, it’s that we make sure we are cognizant of all these questions while cooking up a solution towards justice.
And organizing each other will help us get there.
Also I’m a firm believer that ppl don’t choose better bc they honestly don’t know better. Education used to radicalize is key. Swear to god, reformers will shift their views w a quickness if they were taught abt abolition in a way that makes sense to them.
You cannot tell ppl to “just read or get on Google”. Like if you were taught maths that way, you would never understand it and hate it. And you know damn well Google is 12 and will provide opp ass info. We need ppl w patience willing to teach & expose each other to sources.
