When you study every law passed after slavery ended, you realize that we were constantly punishing black ppl for not being slaves anymore

Black codes & Pig Laws set to make the lived of newly freed blacks as difficult as possible. They forced them into long & cheap labor contracts. They couldn’t get any job without approval or quit at well. They also were treated like hardcore felons for stealing a farm chicken

South Carolina said that if you worked for a white man, he was to be called master, you lived in his house & he could whip you if you’re under 18. If u tried to quit, you’d be captured and forced back into your contract

Vagrant laws allowed ppl who gambled or peddled to be forced into labor. Their children were then designated to white men for free labor. But since it was an “apprenticeship “ they kept the kids like wards & had to teach em a skill

Mississippi & South Carolina wanted to make sure that the Freed men knew that they shoulda stayed slaves
