(Thread about trans rights in UK below) *Please RT*

Watched the government's response to its consultation on the Gender Recognition Act and completey dishearted by literally everything @trussliz said.

cc’ing my MP @peterkyle

Liz Truss is:
- Talking about gender in a completely medical context and not recognising many trans people dont wish to medically transition.

- Using language separating women and trans people when it really needs to be “women, men and non-binary people” not “women and trans people”
- She thinks we want more clinics, lower fees for a certificate and lower waiting times when all we want is self id

- Her entire response is framed around her misplaced belief that trans people are a threat to women and 0 to do with our rights
- Its clear she’s influenced by TERF hate groups funded and platformed by people like JK Rowling.

- She doesnt get that there are separate issues at play here, the need for self ID, for people that medically transition to get the care they need and for nonbinary recognition
- Liz Truss using language of “protecting womens spaces” (prisons & refuges) in the context of trans people is again fear mongering and detached from reality. The only people in danger are trans people who lack access to safe spaces and end up on the streets.
- There is no talk about the help that the government will provide trans people who have been forced into homelessness due to non-accepting families and the inability to find a job due to several factors such as their documents not matching who they present as.
- Talking about the “need” for “checks and balances” for people that transition is cleverly crafted language for “we want to gatekeep who is trans so that we only let transexuals(trans people who medically transition) assimilate into our binary gendered society”
- She is completely and deliberately ignoring non-binary people. She does not acknowledge them once and only 1 MP briefly brought up non-binary folks in a question. This government and frankly parliament as a whole needs to do better to recognise gender diversity.
💥Trans people just want to live their lives and dont want to justify their existence to a jury. Trans people want free and accessible healthcare. Trans ppl want to declare their gender easily. Binary trans people want be seen as the men and women that they are and want access...
...to single sex spaces. Non-binary folks want to be seen, they want to be able to use whatever space they feel safest in. Non-binary folks feel utterly opressed in this gendered world and need far more reforms than I can list here. For a start give them an X gender marker on IDs
Trans people are not a threat to women. We never have been and it is a false narrative grown out of fear and hate from TERF organisations and from the fear of people who dont understand the lived experiences of trans people.
I’m extremely worried about her misplaced concern about reviewing the access of trans healthcare for children. We need to believe kids when they tell us their gender does not match with the gender they were assigned at birth. Trans kids want access to puberty blockers before...
... the influence of puberty that can lead to them suffering from severe depression and performing badly at school and social life. So many trans kids commit suicide because of lack of support. Trans kids want access to HRT when they’re of age.
Young trans people and older trans people who wish to medically transition are totally bankrupt by medical fees that they pay out of their own pocket. I’ve already spent 25 000 pounds on my own transition and have many more fees ahead of me. If trans kids have puberty blockers..
.. they wouldnt need to financially ruin themselves later in life reversing the effects of the wrong puberty. We need to support amazing trans organisations for kids such as @Mermaids_Gender not vilify them.
We need to also stop this idea that trans only means trans women. Can we please start recognising all the amazing trans men out there that are always conveniently left out of the conversation?! TERF hate groups refer to trans men as “mutilated women” and this is has to stop!
As a trans woman I want to see the narrative shift from being focused only on us and to include trans men and non-binary folks as well. All too often the media fixates on trans women because news agencies and television make a lot of money turning our lives into a spectacle.
This fixation on only trans women translates into a lot of conspiracy theories and false narratives that influences everyday people and policy makers and look where we are... in a confused, misinformed sorry state. Invite trans people across the gender spectrum to parliament...
... let trans people speak for themselves and work with trans organisations to better understand our needs.

All too often cisgendered policy makers are deciding the futures of marginalized trans folk, you need to make every effort to have us at the table.
Trans lives are not a debate. We are here and have always been here we’re only now able to come out of the shadows because the world is slowly becoming a better place for trans people. We still live with the fear of death and violence everyday, some of us are risking our own...
... safety for trans liberation. We’re sick and tired and must be heard.

Please @trussliz you say UK is a leading example of LGBT rights and we wholeheartedly disagree with you. The UK has become the battleground of trans rights and it’s your job to protect us.
All trans people are asking for is to enjoy the same basic human rights everyone else has access to. This is the rights issue of our time and history will not look favourably on people like Liz Truss if she continues down this path. The government has failed us.
(End of thread)

It’s clear @trussliz is either fueled by her own or other peoples misplaced fears of trans people and creating policies that are not furthering the rights of UK transgender residents

I encourage others to respond and cc their MPs
