If your blood group is A-, B-, O- or AB- and you get pregnant for a man who is A+, B+, O+ or AB+,

Your body will see that baby as a foreign body/invader, it will try to attack the baby.

Once your blood and baby’s blood mixes- which can happen during pregnancy, Labour, delivery, miscarriage or during an abortion- your body will produce its soldiers (called antibodies) to try an attack that baby of a man with blood group + factor.

This means you are “sensitised”.

Now when your antibodies attack the baby, it destroys the baby’s red blood cells- this causes accumulation of bilirubin in the baby:

Low blood level
Jaundice
Liver damage
Heart failure
Brain damage
Generalised swelling
And baby dies.

Doctors call this Erythroblastosis Fetalis.

Usually the first pregnancy may be safe because that’s when your body is just getting exposed (sensitised). But any further pregnancies will not be.
