Why Yashiro Nene is a good protagonist: A thread for the misogynists
Nene is, on the surface, a bubbly and cute teenager. There seems to be nothing special about her - how she fantasises and gains crushes easily, and stumbles and fumbles a lot. Going in via anime...she can seem rather obnoxious.
However, consecutive times Nene has proven herself to be far more than that. She is a kannagi - able to pull of yorishiros with ease and see spirits. She uses this to help Hanako and the school mysteries. She could’ve just been completely shut off about it, but she took it up.
She is heavily protective of her friends (see when Aoi went missing and Hanako was revealed to have killed) and supports them to the best of her abilities. Shes flawed, sometimes thinking about herself, but that’s what makes her real. That’s what sets her apart from others - that
she cares about herself whilst others, too. She’s quick to be defensive about Hanako, and it’s obvious to see she cares about him a lot. The same can be said for Kou. Kou and Nene have a good friendship and are able to lift each other up, and be extremely brave together.
Nene has been brave so many times, it’s unreal. She threatens Mei so she can get out of the perfect world, and then devises a whole plan as to how to get out. She defies Hanako. She isn’t submissive and a damsel - she knows what she’s doing. She helps bring everyone back to
normal in Mokke of the Dead, and literally intercepts Tsukasa while he’s forcing Mitsuba to eat a heart. She knows what he’s capable of, but she was willing to step up against him to help Mitsuba. She gets Sumire out of No.6’s boundary, despite Hanako being unhappy about it.
All the while she’s faced with her death, which could come any moment. She still manages to smile and live her life normally, and believes in Hanako. Yashiro Nene isn’t dumb. She isn’t weak. She isn’t a stereotypical girl main character with a harem and whatnot.
So shut up. She’s doing her best.
