I generally don't rant on twitter. But have to call out Hypocrisy wherever possible. When everyone over the last 2 weeks have been talking about #TheSocialDilemma

Small thread - 1/n
I went saw the trailer and nothing that I didn't know was there but people were like you should totally watch it and I went ahead and saw the full 95 mins.

Good stuff. I immediately recommended this to our family whatsapp group and amma even asked me what is it about (2/n)
then I explained how Product Managers like me use Growth Hacking, dark patterns etc in social media how it tricks you into opening app, spending time etc.

She was like ohh, now I know why I got a notification that someone tagged you in a photo etc. (3/n)
But what disappointed me in this entire documentary is how there is no mention of @netflix anywhere and it talks about YouTube, google, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter etc

This is the same company whose CEO once said - They don't compete with Prime or Theatres. (4/n)
They compete with Sleep.

Ok, look I repeat. Compete with Sleep

(5/n)
They follow several dark patterns which are now termed as growth hacking by all of us.

For eg 1) - Releasing all the episodes at once so that you "Binge" watch.

The standard pattern for any Netflix series is 1st episode is great 2-8 is bad or ok. 9 and 10 amazing, (6/n)
so that you come back and again watch the next season..

2) Autoplay next episode - Woww. This is a great feature. Ya right !!!

3) A/B Testing - They do several tests on you but only YouTube and Facebook are wrong. Eg on Thumbnails (7/n)
4) No 1 in India - These tags give you social proof agreed, it is also a growth hack only
5) Their Recommendation - We all love it right ? No doubt, the same machine knows more than anyone else in Netflix even today. (8/n)
Finally I would finish with a great quote by a marketing Legend - Vadivelu

Ungalukku vandha ratham, ennaku vandha thakkali chutney.

End of rant.

Sorry and Thanks.
