STRAY - A thread about my video game concept!
Firstly, let& #39;s introduce the main characters!
This is Stray - short for Estrella! (Stars are a big thing in the game, we& #39;ll get to that) Believe it or not, she is not based off of Luz, I had this idea long before I watched The Owl House skdhfkfdl
Anyhow, she is our lovely adorable protagonist! She& #39;s 14 years old and a witch! She goes to magic school by day, which is a big function in the magic system that I& #39;ll get to later. She lives with her grandmother in a cute little neighborhood, and she& #39;s very friendly :)
This is Lake - one of Stray& #39;s best friends. He& #39;s also attending magic school (although boys and girls attend different schools, so he& #39;s not at the same one as Stray). He& #39;s incredibly smart but a bit awkward. He loves to learn about magic and collects old spellbooks and such.
This is Olive, Stray& #39;s other best friend! She attends the same magic school as Stray. She& #39;s tough, outspoken, and loyal, but also gets flustered very easily, especially around her crush Audrey. She& #39;s also the one who gave Stray her necklace - which I& #39;ll also explain later.
She& #39;s stoic, and people tend to think she& #39;s mysterious, but she& #39;ll tell you anything so long as she has a reason to. She also reciprocates Olive& #39;s feelings, but is much better at hiding them - although, once again, she doesn& #39;t really try to hide stuff.
Like how Lake knows a lot of spells, and Olive is strong, Audrey has a strength too - she& #39;s a high level performer. Basically she can cast very effective spells that rarely miss.
That& #39;s the main gang! There is an antagonist, but I& #39;ll keep them a mystery under the small chance I do actually make this a thing one day. Showing you the antag would be spoilery. But if you don& #39;t care, let me know, I& #39;d be happy to spill.
So! The magic system.
Every night Stray can go on her roof and look at the stars. From the stars, you can learn spells. You have a limit of learning two every night - one offensive, one defensive. They& #39;re noted in your spellbook.
To be able to use spells in battle, you need to master them. That& #39;s where magic school comes in.
Firstly, there are five practice slots every day at school. You first need to practice a spell three times. One practice takes up one practice slot.
After that you can spar with the spell - You can only spar with it after having practiced it thrice. Sparring also uses a practice slot. You need to win at sparring with the spell at least once. Then, you& #39;re free to use it in any battles in the game!
Practicing the spell after mastering it strengthens its effect and lowers its chance of being unsuccessful, but it also wastes practice slots you could be using to master new ones.
Also, every day at magic school, a spell will be introduced. You only need to practice this spell once to master it. It& #39;s a way of making sure you have at least some spells in your arsenal, as the star stuff is technically optional. However, these spells are lower-level.
So remember how every night you can learn one offensive and one defensive spell? Yeah, that& #39;s significant. The game is story-based, so it doesn& #39;t go on forever. You can only learn a specific number of spells before there are no more days with magic school.
Then, in battles, you have all the spells you& #39;ve mastered to fight - Offensive ones, and defensive ones. You and your enemy have two bars - Health, and energy. Using offensive spells depletes your enemy& #39;s health. Using defensive ones depletes their energy.
Also, certain spells are high-level and will deplete your energy as well.
If your energy is depleted, you retreat from the battle and will have to try again later. If your health is depleted, you are too wounded to continue and must try again later. Either way, it& #39;s a loss.
If you deplete your enemy& #39;s energy, they retreat, and you win. If you deplete their health, you injure them greatly and they retreat. Same thing, but it makes you feel worse about it. That is, until the final battle.
Without saying too much, if you go the offensive route in the final battle, you get the bad ending. You don& #39;t just wound your enemy - you kill them. Stray, feeling incredibly guilt-written, sinks into a depression and gives up using magic forever.
Yeah, you want the good ending. Trust me. It has less depression and also a cute montage.
So the spells you choose to master and use have a great effect on the game. But spells aren& #39;t all there are! Here are some other mechanics.
Group battles - Battles against multiple enemies are fought as a group! In this case, you can utilize each of your teammates& #39; strengths. They will all have their own health and energy bar. This sounds overpowered, but it& #39;s actually quite fair when fighting multiple enemies.
Stray& #39;s necklace - Stray& #39;s necklace is a tool to use when you need your enemy to stop attacking for a few rounds. Using it will summon a distraction. Your enemy will be distracted for three rounds. You can only use this once per battle.
So that’s the thread! I’ll definitely be adding more to the magic system, so mayhaps this thread will have a sequel https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="👀" title="Augen" aria-label="Emoji: Augen"> Also, if anyone were to draw any of my characters, I think I’d die. Just,,,putting that out there
