Some thoughts on Rabin’s legacy in light of the AOC kerfuffle:

Rabin was (as many have pointed out) a complex character who evolved politically over time—not unlike Arafat and others. But it’s important not to overstate his evolution, which was political and not moral.

/1
Rabin never called for ending the occupation and never accepted the goal of a Palestinian state. He never expressed remorse (or even regret) for his “force, might and beatings” policies in the 1st Intifada.

/2
And he certainly never accepted responsibility, much less expressed remorse, for his role in the expulsion of tens of thousands of Palestinians in 1948. In fact, no Israeli leader ever has.

/3
The fact that he was murdered by a Jewish extremist for allowing Palestinians autonomy in 19% of West Bank may say more about Israeli political culture than about Rabin’s legacy. No doubt Y. Amir hoped to stop momentum toward ending the occupation—and in that he succeeded.
