Definitely not a silly question. I don’t have all the answers, but I have some ideas. So what can we do to stop the harassment of trans folks? Thread: https://twitter.com/likeas_thewaves/status/1309621163358814209
1) invest in local 2SLGBTQ+ organizations. These orgs respond to and support folks following experiences of violence, but is one of the most underfunded sectors.
2) challenge traditional GBV / VAW organizations to unpack their complicity in transphobia and transmisogyny. Build real relationships and ensure trans folks (and not just transmasc folks) are present and involved in org decision making.
3) make public education a priority - not just in schools, but in organizations and communities. Folks need opportunities to learn about trans communities and to unpack their own cissexism.
4) provide bystander intervention training to -literally- everyone. Most harassment I’ve experienced took place when others could see it and intervene. Nobody (literally nobody) ever has.
Andddddddd that’s just what’s top of mind atm!
Belated #6) comprehensively reform education systems to address toxic masculinity and patriarchal privilege. Men are always the ones harassing me - let’s get to the root of that.
