Just watched #socialdilemma on Netflix. To borrow an Americanism it got me pissed!!!! Thread coming on. 1/? Social media using the "attention extraction model" is actually older than they appreciate. Yes, the technology is new and its growth is exponential BUT it is just the
/? Latest iteration of advanced capitalism called neoliberalism where the SM market is global and unregulated. But the clue is on the name "attention extraction model". #socialdilemma seemed blissfully aware that this model has clear roots in the "labour extraction model"
/? That kickstarted capitalism in the form of SLAVERY, then later colonialism via a resource extraction model. These earlier forms of extraction models were and still are characterised by the exploitation of the "black" body its labour and its guardianship of natural resources
/? So if we use David Graeber to see how SLAVE labour extraction morphed into market labour extraction via embedded time and motion measurements, then via Crouch track the formation of the consumer and with the help of Baudrillard (B) witness the birth of the consumer market
/? We can see how human choice became commoditised to create profit. Through his B's simulation and simulacra we can see the mind bending reality manipulation of this consumer market that now is about consuming relationships via the image or "appearance" (market inversion)
/? Then we can see the direct lineage of social media and its asymmetric power relations (see fantasy of virtual participation by Travis Nyong'o) coming from early modernism aka capitalism. So like the other excesses of neoliberalism are we now only up in arms about it because
/? It is affecting (exploiting) white people. Is the bite of cannibalism becoming too hard to bear. Bearing in mind that the facism of the WW2 was just colonialism directed at white people (Cesaire). So as fascism morphed but wasn't destroyed, white exploitation also morphed
/? Into the market mechanisms manifesting in consumerism. So we can, of course trace this aspect of profit and mastery as a historical feature of whiteness https://www.palgrave.com/gp/campaigns/social-justice/ornette-clennon But what is the origin of this fake news and the impending civil war #socialdilemma talked about?
/? Interesting that the contributors only spoke about (in the main) about the tipping of reality towards curated fakeness but it didn't seem to be occur to them that these conspiracies and fake news came out of pushing back against seldom heard voices en masse demanding social
/? Justice (multiple IDs and environmental). This very platform has democratised social influence but of course the status quo is not interested in real change because this means a loss of power and control so needs to challenge this idea of equality with competing ideologies
/? That obscure this aim. So instead of censorship and banning the slave learning2 read for fear of revolt (which thankfully happened countless times) they are censoring the modern call4 social justice via obscuration (overwhelming the discursive space with competing ideologies
/? That can also generate money (a bit like the commoditising of debt to launch the consumer market)). Generating profit from pitting competing ideologies against each other and stoking this "tension". Again playbook now self cannibalising whiteness. So without putting SM
/? Technologies into a real historical and ethical context programmes like #socialdilemma will always be merely scratching the surface of the monumental war we fight for our existence. Until they realise that their awareness of the malignant use of SM actually has much wider,
/14 Deeper, historical malignant facets that go FAR FAR beyond regulating SM companies, changing algorithms, "unplugging" servers, their talk about "conversation" and changing our future rings hollow.
a This of course has serious implications for how we organise our "en masse" seldom heard voices, if not on exploitative platforms making profit from casting us into digital Colosseums, then where else? (Keeping in mind the connective qualities of these arenas)
