This is a great paragraph in this article! https://twitter.com/AndresECaicedo1/status/1309590833214009344
Just to circle back to this quote, what I love about it is that perfectly encapsulates what I love about math and mathematicians. There's this belief by the author that he can figure it out by himself, and "how hard could it be?" He doesn't listen to the offered proof. Clearly,
he tries. But then, after realizing that the proof is beyond him, he goes back and learns the proof from someone else. Then, he acknowledges, without embarrassment, that he was unable to find the proof himself and he gives credit where credit is due. I've encountered a lot of
academics in other fields who want to appear smarter and superior to everyone else. I love the humility and generosity of mathematicians.
