I’ve been calling for NYC to do inclusionary rezonings of whiter/wealthier neighborhoods for years (e.g. see our #DesegregatingNYC report from 2018: https://bit.ly/3hWT9n9 ), so of course I support upzoning SoHo/NoHo with Mandatory Inclusionary Housing. https://twitter.com/OpenNYForAll/status/1309488140185407488
And I’m grateful for the support of @OpenNYForAll on the Gowanus Neighborhood Rezoning. Gowanus is not quite as wealthy as SoHo/NoHo, but it's a lot further along in the planning process, and has real potential to move NYC forward on racial equity. https://citylimits.org/2020/09/21/opinion-how-the-gowanus-rezoning-could-push-nyc-forward-on-racial-equity/
But FWIW I think it’s critical to plan comprehensively & equitably for increased density, rather than take a “dart-throwing” approach, as too much of our planning has been for decades, as @ReynosoBrooklyn and I argue here: https://www.gothamgazette.com/opinion/8708-leaving-the-rebny-vs-nimby-doom-loop
We need inclusionary private sector growth, but by itself it won’t solve our housing crisis (or even come close).
