Ok @SpillageVillage, let’s talk. First of all the new album “Spilligion” album is brilliant. I don’t even know where to start in my appreciation for approach and execution of this record. But I’m going to try my best.
I think a great place to start is acknowledging the George Orwell quote, “All art is propaganda”. From the title of the album and the songs, to the blends of sounds of the music, religious elements from Christianity to Islam to Ifa, and potentially more... *chefs kiss*
From Orwell’s quote, it always forces me to ask myself “Why did this creator make this? & why did they make it this way?” SV’s emphasis on religion, of course made me acknowledge it, but for me, it was more about reimagining a new society using our past & present for a new future
We aren’t perfect or without flaw. All of these different cultures, religions, ways of life shouldnt divide us but allow us to be patient or graceful with each other. We should love each anyway. There are odds against all of us, no matter which lane operate in.
So “Spilligion” questions a lot of things but not in a blasphemous way but in more of a, what if? way. If I had to define what Spilligion is, it’s not an absolute as much as it is a space where we all can exist, flawed & all. Recognizing our differences is what makes us beautiful
This album is just as much realistic as it is theoretical. I love that. It feels like a healthy game of tug-of-war where nobody loses. That tension in the middle is where progress lies.
And this doesn’t have to be said, but It’s safe to say every member of Spillage Village and them as a collective, doesn’t make music with the capitalistic interests in mind. They challenge things, ideas. Is that not true meaning of art?
Yes, look pretty, sound good, execute well, but what do you want to say through it? What question are you answering? What question are you asking? Or from the religious aspect, can I make the viewer/listener simply FEEL, regardless if it’s technically “right” or not?
I could go on all day but I’ll be sitting with this album for a while. Thankful for y’all talented mother fuckers dawg @JIDsv @EarthGang @Mereba @6LACK @JurdanBryant @Hollywood_JB @ohchristo @AvatarBenji @SpillageVillage 🐻
