I literally teach this in my class on conversation analysis, these are things we call “pre-sequences” and they’re used because neurotypical folks have a preference for people to offer things rather than have to request them, there’s an actual science of this people can learn! https://twitter.com/feyngels/status/1309402637243158529
We already use the findings of conversation analysis to improve communication practices in all sorts of institutional and organizational contexts. Could it explicate all the weirdness of the interaction order for autistic folks interested in having that explicated? Yeah maybe!
Does it make sense to look at the “normative” organization of talk as a form of allistic hegemony? This isn’t my area but I’m super open to the idea that CA can fruitfully shed light on that
I also just want to echo this ALL DAY, this is like the first thing we cover when I actually teach about this! https://mobile.twitter.com/afrodesiaq/status/1309547920929230848
Context matters, and people who analyze this kind of thing talk a lot about how meaning is constructed collaboratively, in the moment, by ALL parties involved in an interaction!
