BREAKING: The North Carolina Supreme Court just reinstated the life sentences for Christina Walters, Quintel Augustine and Tilmon Golphin, removing them from death row for good.
All three proved racism infected their cases under the North Carolina Racial Justice Act, passed in 2009.
When the law was repealed in 2013, they were all sent back to death row without a new trial — a first in the state.
Today's decision affirms that the state won't sweep evidence of the racism people experienced in their capital cases under the rug. It's an important move towards rectifying the harm that has been caused.
