A few days ago, I reached out to a white male superstar DJ to ask him to sign and share the Pete Tong/Danny Howard petition if he felt like it. That was the only thing I asked him to do. I was under the wildly misguided impression that it might have been a cause he cared about.
Here's a selection of unedited quotes [sic] from his response. “i cant spend the rest of 2020 helping to give traktion to a campaign that has a negative impact on other innocent people’s career, while helping the career of journalists and critics looking looking to cause a stir.”
“all of women’s and minorities’ rights are under threat by trump. I hope you focus youre attention on more pressing matters”
[Note: I have never seen this guy post about Trump or women’s rights in my life. He made a very lame, posturing BLM post after initially making a few shocking, revealing gaffes on the subject.]
“Looking forward: An idea for 2021 is use your voice and journalistic prowess to shed light on the fake producer pandemic. Or even better start a safe place or outlet for good producers to get recognition for their work. [continued in next tweet]
Positivity that moves forward your actual scene that looks to you for guidance. Or is RA and whomever you work for about Clicks now?”
“2020 awakes or illuminates. Who is Anabel? A writer/journalist seeking clicks, or a real investigator? the scene is fucked, and you wanna spend your precious time on a dickhead like Morillo.”
I could barely believe my eyes when I woke to this message. I was once a big fan of this guy’s music. I have no interest in taking down innocent people, nor in clickbait. The idea of writing about the ghost producing “pandemic” one day does actually appeal to me.
It’s an interesting topic. But the idea that I should focus on that right now rather than trying to help clean up our racist, unsafe scene? What the actual fuck.
I finally launched my own website, The Politics of Dancing, around three weeks ago, intended as a place to write about artists and causes I believe in, especially underrepresented and lesser heard voices.
I have not even had a chance to look at the site since its launch as I’ve been focussed on sexual predators. I hope to get back to the site as soon as I can, but this work is my priority right now.
Not for clicks, but because the scene is in desperate need of an overhaul to ensure the prosperity and safety of all, and if I can help with that in any way, I will.

To that superstar DJ who suggests I’m wasting my time: fuck you.
I'm not going to name names at this time. If at some point I feel it's necessary, I certainly will.
