Olivia Munn is set to play a 'UN journalist' in an upcoming drama centered around the siege of Aleppo during the Syrian conflict. The drama, titled 'Aleppo,' will focus on the journey of a Syrian refugee and a UN journalist as they navigate the region.
The announcement of Munn's casting drew criticism online, with many expressing fear the film will center the Western journalist rather than the Syrian refugee.
The casting of the Syrian starring character has not yet been announced. Since 2011, at least 400,000 Syrians are reported to have died in the Syrian conflict. Millions more have been left displaced or without homes.
Since the start of the conflict, several Syrian-produced documentaries have been released, including 'For Sama,' which followed the life of a pregnant woman during the war.
'For Sama's director and star, Waad Al-Kateab, was named one of Time's 100 most influential people of 2020.
'Aleppo' is currently in preproduction in LA and will be directed by Brazilian filmmaker David Schurmann.
