Yesterday I went to see Syksyn jälkeen saapuu kevät
(KRL: Sygyzyn jälles tulou kevät, ENG: There Will Be Spring) which was the VERY FIRST long movie where Karelian (Livvi-Karelian dialect) was the main language of the movie and here's some of my thoughts of the movie in English.
This thread WILL contain some spoilers (and the reason I wanted to write this in English is that I can reach more people but yeah).
1)
The beginning of the movie hit me hard. I must admit that I cried in the theater. Ah ~transgenerational trauma time~
The movie's main protagonist is Anni, a young Karelian and Karelian speaking woman whose family became refugees because of WW2.
2)
But her father gets shot by Finnish Soldiers, most likely because after all "Karelians are dirty r*sskies/r*ssä" or at least that's my understanding why he was shot by the soldiers. Her mother saws his husband getting shot and she's deeply traumatized by that.
3)
The beginning really hit me hard. It reminded how my mother's side of family was treated in the 30-40s.
After all my great grandmother and grandmother were dirty r*sskie refugees and I'm a half-r*sskie.
TL;DR: They were threatened with violence etc
4)
When I was younger I joked that I'm a varttir*ssä (quarter r*sskie) which made my mother corrected me that I'm actually half-r*sskie but yeah enough of that. 😂

There's a small timeskip and the current time is somewhere after WW2.
5)
The tensions between Karelian refugees and the Finns really is something.
Jokingly I really liked that when we see two supporting characters, Anni's brother Manu and (don't remember his name) KARELIAN HORSE CARRIAGE DRIFTING in the roads while the Finns were in the church.
6)
That won't be my last joke in this thread but I just had to it. But yeah Manu and Don't-remember-his-name where steali- ah burrowing hay from a Finnish man, Tauno Varis, a Finnish war veteran who became disabled in the war , who's also kind of their landlord.
7)
Anni's brother Matti finds out that Manu and What's-His-Name have been "burrowing" hay and rightly gets angry at his little shit little brother for making the already difficult relationship with their landlord with even worse.
8)
Honestly my reaction to Manu was initially "THE BEST BOY MANU" and then it became "MANU NO"... and later it became "MANU DO YOU HAVE A DEATHWISH" but my final stance on his character is "Manu is a problematic fave and he did some things wrong"
9)
Now I'm skimming through the plot but it's basically
- Anni fucks her landlord.. a lot
- Anni's Finnish friend tells her about that there's fabric factory (Finlayson???) in Tampere that's hiring people
- Manu finds out her older sister fucks their landlord and lashes out
- Anni is getting tired of her brother's shit and trying to fix their shit because she's really good terms with him
- Anni's mother is deeply traumatized, has panic/anxiety attacks because of it and these are handled well imo
- Manu is being a little shit and get's his ass kicked
- the landlord decides to rise their rent from 2k Finnish marks to 6k Finnish marks because the landlord and brothers keep antagonizing each other
- "ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL US? ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL MY FAMILY? ARE YOU TRYING KILL ME. You can't fuck me if you don't lower the rent >:(" - Anni
- "Babe don't be angry :'( Let's talk and meet in the forest at our fucking spot" - Tauno the landlord
- Tauno's wife finds out that her husband is cheating on her and it's also implied that Tauno didn't loose just an arm in the arm, he also lost his penis or the war made him sexually impotent
- Things escalate, Anni considers moving to Tampere and tells her mother about the plans which made her stab her with a fork in grief because she doesn't want to lose her daughter
- Later there's a scene where Anni is in bed with her landlords wife and the landlord is watching
- Anni goes for a nightly ride, it's implied that she falls from horseback, she either breaks her nape or gets a serious hit to the head which kills her instantly
- She's found dead by Tauno and she carries her to her family, breaks into an ugly cry and her mother is devastated
10)
I forgot to mention that Matti gets sentenced to jail from stealing hay and possibly beating up their landlord because of Manu. But yeah basically that's the story. The story is kinda confusing and it could be better.
11)
If this was a 100% Finnish language only movie I would rate it 2/5 however because this is the very first long movie in Karelian language I'll rate it 3/5.
I would never believed that I could be able to see a movie in my another native language but here I am.
12)
And I've been underestimating my Karelian skills a lot since I could have be able to understand 90% of the Karelian dialogue without subtitles hahah.
I also want to lament the lack of traditional Karelian clothing but alas it's understandable why there wasn't any but ruutat..
13)
I hope after Syksyn jälkeen saapuu kevät I can see a rise of Karelian language movies in Finland and in Russia but we'll see. But on the other hand I hope the next hypothetic Karelian language movies don't remind me of transgenerational trauma......
14)
So here's to hoping for more movies in Karelian but for the love of anything please no war-related movies, transgenerational trauma movies and I don't want to be reminded that "Karelians are dirty r*sskies". Feel good movies would be nice...
Especially with ahem gayer content but that's just me.
Also Anni deserved better.

I hope you enjoyed this train wreck of a thread.
