If @AOC can't even do an event with *Peace Now* remembering Yitzhak Rabin, the general turned peacemaker killed by a far-right extremist for trying to make peace with the Palestinians, it suggests caring more about Twitter than good real world outcomes. Hope that's not the case.
Here is the speech Yitzhak Rabin delivered moments before he was murdered at his own peace rally. There's more political courage in it than most politicians show in a lifetime.
If getting assassinated at your own peace rally after giving a full-throated speech in favor of the cause is not enough to deserve to be commemorated, hard to see what any Israeli could possibly do to earn a kosher stamp from these people, and hard to see why they would want it. https://twitter.com/Yair_Rosenberg/status/1309517798817890306
Anyway, as I said, I hope this is just a misunderstanding about framing or promotion of the event, and not some repudiation of Rabin, because my sense is that contra her critics, AOC is wiser and more strategic than Twitter's worst instincts on things like this. Guess we'll see.
I'll give the last word to a progressive Israeli and Egyptian. You don't make peace between friends; you do it by converting former enemies. That's the whole point of diplomacy, the entire ethos of progressive foreign policy, and what Rabin died for—and it deserves to be honored.
The Washington correspondent for Israel's leftist Haaretz paper, @amirtibon, just finished his posting and can now say what he thinks, and this paragraph from him on how Bernie has helped the Israeli left fight Bibi and AOC has ... not is pretty notable. https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium.highlight-liberal-zionists-it-s-time-to-admit-aoc-just-doesn-t-want-to-be-your-friend-1.9190127
For my part, I will just say that if Yitzhak Rabin, a guy who changed his worldview and literally died for peace, fails your purity test, it's possible your purity test isn't aimed at actually brokering real world peace and is bad.
Part of doing politics well is knowing how to build a big tent to accomplish very difficult things. If Rabin can't fit into your Middle East peace tent, not sure you even have a tent as opposed to a very narrow bunker. https://twitter.com/Yair_Rosenberg/status/1310295918437171205
Progressive political arm of the largest Jewish denomination in America weighs in on AOC pulling out of Peace Now's Yitzhak Rabin memorial. This isn't the AIPAC set; Reform Judaism's leadership has been sharply critical of the Israeli right and Netanyahu. AOC lost them too here. https://twitter.com/JonahPesner/status/1311337123950342149
