Ok this seems to be difficult for people to understand so I’m going to break it down as simply as I can. The total amount of new budget is $70 dollars, but it is NOT being allotted to simply finish the original film.
The films original DC was edited down to 214. That version of the film was being worked to completion WHILE ZS was working with the studio to ALSO create a version edited down to their time restraints. This happened with BvS. The DC was likely always going to be released.
When ZS left the film the work to finish his DC was abandoned before fully completed, and major portions of the film were quickly rewritten and reshot to create a wholly new, third version: original DC, original theatrical and Whedon reshot theatrical.
But going back before principle photography there was material that the studio asked to be changed at the screenplay or pre-production stages; like the design of Steppenwolf. We don’t know what other material was altered before principle production, but we know it happened.
So here is the plan for this money illustrating why this is not, “remaking” the original film. First and foremost the original theatrical edit is being abandoned and the 214 minute DC is being expanded. They could have simply completed the work on the original DC and released it
but they chose to add material to make it longer for the new mini-series format. Reports say the original DC was 90%+ complete, so all this money isn’t just going to finish the original film.
Expanding the film will require new editing and inclusion of the films original score. The film will likely need to do FX work on material being included from the assembly cut that was not in the original DC. This material wasn’t originally intended for release so it wasn’t done
This will be all new work on already existing material, again, as part of the effort to expand the film into a mini. This has nothing to do with how complete the original DC was as this material wasn’t part of that.
Next, money is being invested to revert or include material that was excised or changed before production, again like Steppenwolf, who has to be re-animated and rendered through the entire film.
Next there will likely be either additional photography or reshooting to address storytelling that had been changed or excised from the original shooting screenplay. This could be creating scenes that never shot or re-shooting scenes that had been rewritten - we don’t know yet.
Again this is not about completing the original DC - that work had been done. That film could have had its remaining work completed and have been released. This is, for all intents and purposes, a new project undertaken by choice; not by necessity to complete the original film.
To sum up; the original DC was damn near finished; that’s been reported by Mark Hughes. This work is NOT to complete the original DC. This is a NEW project undertaken to create a uniquely different mini-series presentation.
This is NOT completing the original film. This is creating a new mini series with uniquely new material from the film.
I honestly don’t know how to make this anymore simple - it’s REALLY not that complex a scenario.
