My grandma& #39;s not doing great, for non-COVID reasons, and I& #39;d very much appreciate your thoughts and prayers for her.
Grandma update: Yesterday, I got a call from her nursing home that it& #39;s time to move her into hospice. It may be weeks or months, but she& #39;s moving toward the end.
My grandma& #39;s condition declined rapidly today, and it looks like she is very close to the end. Please pray for us both.
My grandmother, Jeanette Thompson, died tonight at around 8:50 p.m. ET. Here she is with my mom, who passed in 2017.
I& #39;m an only child of an only child. My mom and grandmother raised me. Mawmaw was the last living member of that family, the family I grew up with.
Because of the pandemic, I couldn& #39;t be there when she died. I don& #39;t have words for how that feels.

I want to tell you a story Mawmaw told me. I think it shows the kind of woman she was.
One day, she got a flat alone out in the country. A man pulled over to ask what was wrong, and my grandmother offered him $5 to change the tire. 1/?

Now this was rural Georgia in the 50s, and Mawmaw kept a little one-shot pistol in her purse.
At some point, the man asked, you know, instead of a $5, how about giving him *something else*.
She pulled the pistol out and said, "You just keep changing that tire." He did, too.

More stories to come, but here& #39;s one little memory. This is my mom, grandma, great-grandma, great-aunt and me.
Mom dropped out of college. Mawmaw graduated high school, and my great-grandma dropped out of elementary school to care for her ten siblings. All were pink collar. 1/2

Mom and Mawmaw always pushed me to get more education. I didn& #39;t listen in high school — too busy with bands — but finally wised up in college.
When I got into grad school, Mawmaw filled the house with "Harvard Grandma" mugs. It was very cute.
Here we are at commencement.
