A massive fire tore through the barnyard #OTD in 1854, destroying the 4-story barn and 150-foot-long carriage/wagon house. With the help of a fire engine, enslaved persons from Somerset Place and the Pettigrew plantations saved the other buildings in the area.

Neighbor Charles Pettigrew wrote, “It must have been intensely hot and to me it is almost inconceivable how the other houses were saved.” He estimated the loss to be at least $5,000. The 4-story barn was later rebuilt and is pictured in this #thread.
