I can& #39;t stop looking at this pie chart. This is percentage of each zoning category for ALL of the land in Austin that is zoned for residential use. Note that multi-family buildings are not allowed in ~85% of it. WHY?
Looking at individual neighborhoods, this is even crazier. Here& #39;s Hyde Park. Remember that this is next to one of the largest universities in the country and a few miles from downtown:
Constrast these with Riverside. Seems pretty equitable and cool.
Also, feel like I should clarify: It& #39;s not that Riverside shouldn& #39;t look like this, it& #39;s that wealthy neighborhoods next to downtown should ALSO look like this.
Also, give me more neighborhoods you are curious about and I& #39;ll add them.
Here& #39;s Allandale. Less than 1% of Allandale is explicitly Multi-Family.
Zilker. This is basically downtown Austin.
Bouldin, also basically downtown.
Here& #39;s Georgian Acres, the area north of 183 and West of I-35. Compare that to Allandale, Hyde Park, or Zilker. Then go look up the census about race and income. Then watch as Austin pats itself on the back for being a hip, progressive, equitable city.
