With respect, I disagree. Strategic partnerships go further and deeper when based on shared domestic and international values. This surely affects the quality of partnership. E.g. it's close to impossible that the US-India nuclear deal could have happened in the absence of US perceptions of, & rhetoric around, domestically-focused shared identity, as well as outward Indian democratic benevolence. 2/3
Finally, none of us can produce "politically neutral analysis". Arguing that domestic illiberalism doesn't harm India internationally - it takes sides. It is every influential scholar's right to take sides. But there is also great responsibility in this. 3/3
