Sad this has hundreds of RTs w phrenology/physiognomy refs. No one even opened the paper. From first sentence starts discussing dangers of linking personality to facial features. Then uses models to expose *social* bias & how *we humans* wrongfully infer personality from face. https://twitter.com/baumard_nicolas/status/1308715609795039232">https://twitter.com/baumard_n...
It& #39;s sad, because it& #39;s the responsibility of critical discourse to identify & expose narratives counter to the mainstream. But what has critical discourse come to? RT pictures without even clicking a link? Now how can anyone take us - & the true underlying problems - seriously?
This shld be an important lesson regarding the importance of comms, especially wrt such sensitive topics. While the papers are clear that they are referring to *socially perceived & biased* attributes, when taken out of context in the tweets, this is not clear and can be misread.
However, an interesting pt wrt language, concerns who the audience is. The authors (in both papers) refer to "perceived trustworthiness" & "trustworthiness evaluation". To lay public, this may seem vague, & can be interpreted as if they are implying this is actual trustworthiness
but in their lit, "evaluation" is clearly defined as how humans (inaccurately) perceive & evaluate faces, as a result of implicit bias.
This poses an interesting problem for academic comms, bc its targeted at peers & others who are familiar, or know to look up, terminology & refs

My pt with this thread, is not that I& #39;m excited by this research. But I am very anti-excited when I see something RT 1000s of times, with various claims (esp in my TL, by ppl I consider friends peers colleagues allies). And upon clicking the link, I see claims are unfounded ...
I wouldn& #39;t care if the

Read the whole damn thing. Then read a few of the key refs. If you don& #39;t have time to read. Don& #39;t RT https://twitter.com/memotv/status/825884859310735360">https://twitter.com/memotv/st...
