Today we mark the feast of #StCeolfrith with a thread about the Codex Amiatinus, the only complete survivor of Ceolfrith's three great Bibles. This astonishing Bible would have weighed over 34 kilograms! We have (pictured here) one of only two full-sized facsimiles in the world.
This Codex was produced at Jarrow and Wearmouth. They sought to reproduce the style of Mediterranean art which was available to them, making the colours used in this Bible typically very different to other #Northumbrian books. The Bible had only a few full-page illustrations.
#Ceolfrith set out on his journey from #Northumbria to Rome in early June of the year 716. Travelling from the monasteries of Jarrow and Wearmouth, he and his companions travelled horseback before sailing across the English Chanel to France.
#Ceolfrith sadly died on 25th September during this journey, passing away as they reached the monastery of Langres in Burgundy. It was his companions who continued this long journey and presented the Codex Amiatinus to the Pope Gregory in Rome.
But this is not where the story ends for the Codex Amiatinus! You can find out more by visiting our museum.
