I always go for opportunities I am not even qualified for. I apply do my research and do the work brilliantly. This one time I decided to apply for something and I was accepted, it was a joint meeting with other candidates and it was so clear that I was extremely under qualified.
It was a feminist gig, everyone on board had served as Directors for some of the largest NGOs and had over a decade of experience. I was just like this time madam you have gone too far, you will just look like a fool, kindly ask to leave. You didn't even have time to research.
The interviews started and talatatada your girl was the only one who actually knew all the answers. I was the only one who did extensive work at grassroots level, I saw first hand what was happening and it also helped that I read extensively and I am a brilliant researcher.
I knew the statistics, solutions that should be implemented and thanks to Twitter Feminists I knew what was happening in other places. I was the only one called back to do work with them. My point is, if there is a chance for you to make it, to get noticed please do not hesitate.
Just apply, apply, volunteer and go after what you want. Even if you don't get it, make yourself noticable. Sometimes I apply for things not because I know I will get the job, but because I want them to know me. That when something I qualify for pops up, they know who to call.
