For this week’s #FactFriday we will be looking at the Bone family of #KingsLynn’s North End. So to start us off here's TY1991.958 showing four generations of the Bone family, L to R; Len, George, Francis and Gary in 1979.
George ‘Broken Dish’ Bone [TY1989.488] had a bad habit of staying out late at the pub & then returning home & throwing his supper on the floor because it was cold. His wife, Annie Jane [TY1989.490], finally got fed up & baked him a pie made of the broken dishes!
Although many Northenders lived in slum housing ‘Broken Dish’ [TY.1989.489] was one of the more well off fishermen. He built a house for each of his sons & paid for an expensive Italian marble memorial for himself & Annie in Hardwick Road Cemetery [TY2000.4450 & TY2000.4451].
TY1989.51 depicts ‘Broken Dish’ and Annie’s son, Sam, along with an unnamed friend, in naval uniform. Unfortunately our records don’t tell us which is which!
Sam Bone’s son was also called Sam and in TY1989.50 we have an image of him in his Minesweeper’s uniform. We also have a photo of Sam Jnr’s brother Willie [TY1989.48] in his Naval Patrol Vessel uniform.
Another of ‘Broken Dish’ and Annie’s sons was Ernest. He and his wife Sarah Ann (nee Hendry) are pictured in TY2000.4520 on the day of their daughter Thirza’s wedding to George William Neale. The happy couple can be seen in TY2000.4522.
Arthur and Bill Bone [TY2011.7201] were the sons of ‘Broken Dish’ and Annie’s son George. They are pictured here c1938 by the well-known local photographer Mr Goodchild.
Arthur Bone later married May (maiden name unknown) on 30th May 1942. TY2011.7202 is the copy of their wedding photo which was sent to his uncle and aunt (Ernest and Sarah Ann Bone).
In TY2007.6651 we have a copy of a studio portrait taken to mark the wedding of Elizabeth Bone (b. 1842) and Thomas Senter (b. 1843 – d.1935).
Tom Senter [TY1989.182] was a fisherman who 60 years later would be living in one of the remaining @Truesyardmuseum cottages and annoying his neighbours with his piccolo playing.
We have another image of Elizabeth Senter (nee Bone) in our collection [TY2007.6653] which probably dates to c1874 and taken in memorial of her son, Willian Crisp Senter, who died on 19th January 1874.
We do have some mystery pictures that we know show members of the Bone family, but we have no idea who they are – can you help us with TY1993.1615?
