I was just listening to @JonahDispatch and @DavidAFrench, as they opined that the country was falling apart because "we" can't learn how to live with each other. The evil Trump voters, the people they think too ignorant to understand the danger of these times, are LARPING.
The hilarious part was their talking about The BIg Sort. Both of them, they say have "lived among liberals". A conservative professor at a elite university or a writer PAID to have conservative opinions is an utterly risk free way to brag about living among the other folk.
I mean, my god, listening to these two elites talk about how really nice liberals are, just like normal people! and that they knew this, because unlike the unsophisticated rube Trump voters, they've lived in great diversity.
These two are just clueless. Listening to them verbally wring their hands about the state of this country, a state that only people like them, tolerant people, knowledgeable people, who understand divergent views, can understand, was just hilarious.
They live in cocoons. Educationally, experientially, ethnically, racially homogeneous cocoons. And they're BRAGGING about how much they understand the big wide world of difference out there.

But the best part was their talk of divorce.
Yes, they're worried we'll crack up. Not in a war, just an exhausted secession. California, mainly.

hahahahaha.

Your monthly reminder that California had more Trump voters than any state but Florida or Texas.
The nine counties of the Bay Area, home to Silicon Valley, San Francisco, Oakland, and Marin, and, separately, Los Angeles county produced more Trump votes EACH than the entire states of Idaho and Montana.

But sure, California's just going to leave the union.
Roughly half of California whites are Republicans. Think they're sticking around? No, they'll leave--and they'll probably be *following* the African Americans running for their lives, because they know what happens. FIgure a good chunk of white Dem CAs would leave as well.
A lot of multi-generation American Hispanics would leave, a big number. Recent Asian arrivals would stay. Also a big number.

So in this fiction these two are sadly envisioning, CA is left with what, 30% whites, a ton of Asians, and recent Hispanic arrivals?
And naturally, those progressive white Californians want open borders, which means all of Central America would show up, but that'd be dwarfed by the 10% of China that arrived within a few weeks. What army would stop them?
Never mind the many CA government employees who would NEVER allow the state to leave, because they want their damn pensions, which California couldn't afford with all the immigrants storming in. And it doesn't matter, because China would be taking over pretty damn soon.
This whole outline assumes that the US would ever let the rich farmlands and coastline of CA leave, particularly given the likelihood that China would show up and take over. Which it would not.
Dave and Jonah, for all their wise weary words of tolerance, can't get past white. Like all Republicans who despise Trump, they think only of the "ignorant" "low information" Trump voters (white) and the insane Dems (also white). Along with the centrists and liberals (guess what?)
Republican "thinkers" know, theoretically, that Dems in diverse states build their insurmountable majorities by the non-white populations. They've even recently discovered that those non-white populations aren't very progressive, which...
...any middle class white person who actually lived in those diverse state could have told you twenty years ago. Middle class whites in diverse states know all about this, because they aren't rich enough to live in white enclaves.
They don't know why CA blacks would be heading for the exits in the impossible likelihood of a Calexit. They don't know that blacks don't have enough numbers to survive the utter lack of interest Asians and Hispanics would have in their problems.
They can't even realize, apparently, that any progressive state that was allowed to leave the union would never be able to be the progressive haven because most of the whites want to be Americans, and they'd leave.
They don't really understand that most of the whites in these overwhelmingly Dem states aren't progressive, that most diverse states had white votes that went Trump. They don't know what it means.
Anyway. It was hilarious to listen to them talk. In a bad way. Because so few people with any kind of megaphone actually understands American diversity. White Dems operatives don't--they farm that out to the identity operatives. GOP operatives (by definition white) have no clue.
You're just now starting to see people wake up to the fact that there really isn't a Hispanic vote. First, break them up by country. Then take a look at how many generations they've been in this country. The longer their stay, the more they profile like whit3es.
Give them a few decades and they'll finally figure out there isn't an Asian vote either. But they don't care about that because there aren't enough to make a difference, and the only Asians these guys know are their media buddies (bananas, one and all).
By the time they notice, it will be after decades of calling Asians "skilled" immigrants and encouraging their migration here. By that time, the Indians and Pakistanis, the Chinese and Japanese (not to mention the Vietnames and Koreans, will be recreating their hostilities here.
Damn, I had a test to create.

Just one more thing: It's not that I'm sanguine about the country's problems. I'm not. I just think we need people who actually understand how diverse the country is to talk about it, and that ain't those two.
Oh, hey, that reminds me. What's LARP?

(I kid. I know. Sort of.)
Speaking of which, here's another long take that talks of "America" but means "white America". The number of "woke" blacks, Hispanics, and Asians is *entirely* unrelated to the massive Dem vote these groups deliver. They are fringe.

"Woke/unwoke" is a white thang.
Whoops! the last tweet was meant to include this article, which (full disclosure) I haven't read just, just saw in @ScottMcConnell9 's feed. But notice it talks about "america" when it clearly means "whites". https://twitter.com/ScottMcConnell9/status/1309509998981066752
In an article on this very topic, I included a little known Damon Knight quote I first noticed probably 40 years ago (written a year before Kate Wilhelm died):

Yet another thread on "Americans"--ironically, asserting correctly that journalists are tunnelvisioned--that means for the most part "white Americans and a few highly educated Oreos, bananas, and pintos" (kidding on the last, it just saved me space). https://twitter.com/KeithNHumphreys/status/1309507157969104897
